Girlfriends are good for the soul; they are there for the good times and the not so good. A good time: “celebrating a significant birthday in Singapore at the Shangri-la Valley Wing”.

Juanita and I had arrived a day earlier and had enjoyed the unlimited alcohol, breakfast, afternoon tea and evening canapés in the lobby area, a perfect spot for women to relax after shopping! A little exercise was also on the agenda with an early morning swim in the sizeable pool positioned within a kaleidoscope of gardens.

Sitting in the lobby we watched as the red carpet was rolled out and the staff gathered for the birthday girls’ arrival. Come here Jan the Duty Manager said ‘What do you think of the cake, we also have the Tattinger Champagne chilling to toast their arrival’ he smiled.

After a S$20 taxi ride to Collyer Quay, I surprised the girls with a booking for lunch at ME@oue a top end restaurant with a unique combination of French, Japanese and Chinese cuisines – the first restaurant in Singapore to feature two Michelin star chefs and a celebrity chef. It is situated across Marina Bay opposite the amazing Marina Bay Sands.

My first visit to Newton’s Circus Hawkers Market was I hate to admit well over 30 years ago. This Singapore experience you should not miss, we dined amongst the masses on BBQ prawns, fried rice and steamed green vegetables washed down with tankards of beer! All for S$35 each.

Our stay revolved around shopping and eating and off we headed on a 15 minute walk to Paragon shopping centre in Orchard Road, and of course the incredibly popular Din Tai Fung in the basement of the centre. You put your name on the waiting list and wait with the crowds for around 30 minutes. Well worth the wait for the freshest steam dumplings I have ever experienced.

The challenge I have shopping in Asia is finding sizes 12/14/16, however that problem was solved at the British India shops; we all found our sizes in crisp white linen blouses and colourful kaftans ready for next summer.

Juanita and I mulled over where we host a birthday dinner and we settled on Violet Oon’s restaurant in Bukit Timah Road. Violet Oon is the Julia Child of Singapore and her restaurant in the suburbs was a gem of interesting flavours and slightly eccentric pairings. Surprisingly the price was around A$70 per person including wine.

Over a late night Tattinger we all agreed that a girls weekend should be a yearly event!
