“You don’t have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces – just good food from fresh ingredients.” ― Julia Child

I love my visits to Melbourne – good friends, great restaurants, wonderful retail therapy, plenty of culture and the Prahran market.

I would have to say one of the pleasures of staying with friends in Melbourne is buying fresh ingredients at the food Markets and Prahran Market stands out as my favourite – the joy of a large city population!

For over 125 years the Prahran Market has been one of the premier fresh food Markets in Melbourne.

After buying the weekend papers we headed to the Market Café. This cosy, family owned cornerstone café earmarks Prahran Market and has been the reliable meeting place for customers over the last 17 years. Seated on wooden furniture near a cabinet laden with Greek-influenced cooking, I start the morning with a freshly squeezed orange juice and poached eggs. An espresso machine rumbled away producing exemplary coffee.

The market has lots of meat, poultry and fish stalls and a number caught my attention. Cester’s Poultry and Game stall.

These guys sell everything that is poultry and game related. You can buy rabbit, goat, quail, pheasant, guinea fowl and chicken sliced and diced in a number of ways.

Then there are numerous butcher shops with a grand variety of meats and sausages.

A weekend without crusty bread and ripe red tomatoes is hard to imagine and the choice is endless and yummy.

Ingredients were needed for smoked trout and avocado salad and a chicken salad with noodles so the next stop was the Asian stall and their array of fresh veges and herbs was to die for!

Attempting to stick to a healthy eating regime and staying away from the delicious Italian, Greek and Lebanese cakes and pastries we choose a selection of nuts, pulses and dried fruits from one of a number of stallholders.

The stallholders, passionate about their trade, take pride in stocking the highest quality of ingredients and source locally wherever possible. The Market is closed on gazetted public holidays, Monday and Wednesday and open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

If you love quality, choice and a ‘fresh’ foodie experience I can highly recommend a visit to Prahran Market.
